Norm Benn, C.E.T – EDM-F

Technical and educational support to the elevating devices industry

Norm has more than five decades of experience in the elevating devices industry. Over his career he has worked on the installation and maintenance of elevators in the United Kingdom, West Africa and North America, and served as Chief Inspector of the Elevating Devices Branch at the Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations in Ontario.

He has been active with the Provincial Chief Elevators Inspectors Association and chaired the Elevating Devices Advisory Council for the Canadian Standards Association, helping develop national codes and standards for the sector. Today, Norm continues to provide technical and educational support to the elevating devices industry.

Geetram (GEET) Ramsamooj, B.Sc., M.Sc. (Safety), CRSP

Safety professional and trainer in health and safety and organizational behaviour

Geet is a safety professional and trainer with more than forty years of experience across elevating devices, offshore oil and gas, manufacturing and education. He is a smart-ISO coordinated management system (CMS) Lead Auditor Instructor.

Since the mid-1980s he has consulted in Canada and Trinidad, helping organizations design and implement HSE management programs and conducting audits based on international standards. Geet has developed safety programs and training for sectors such as manufacturing, pulp and paper, mining, health care, law enforcement, education and contractors, working closely with management teams, associations and unions.

William B. Ware

EDM-A Elevating Devices Mechanic and field supervisor

William (Bill) Ware is an Elevating Devices Mechanic with an EDM-A certificate and more than forty years of experience working with many types of elevating devices in Canada and abroad.

His licences include EDM-A from the Technical Standards and Safety Authority, Industrial Mechanic–Millwright (Ontario), QEI–CEI Certified Elevator Inspector (ASME), Alberta Elevator Constructor, CET-S from the National Association of Elevator Contractors in the USA, and a Certificate of Competency from the State of Florida.

Bill has worked in installation, repair, maintenance, inspection and testing across a wide range of elevating devices and has held roles from mechanic through to management. He currently works as a field supervisor in Ontario and instructor with the Norm Benn Training Centre.

Les Csaszar, EDM-B

Construction hoist specialist and international consultant

Les Csaszar has worked in the construction hoist industry for more than forty years. As principal of Urban Hoist he has owned, supplied, designed, serviced and installed numerous projects across Canada, working with standards such as Z183, Z256, B354 and B311 and equipment from manufacturers including Pega, Alimak, Stros, GJJ, Scan, Tornborgs, Multilift and American Hoist.

He continues to act as an installation consultant, inspector and supervisor on international projects in locations such as the United States, Bermuda, Cuba, Italy and Kazakhstan.

Les has also played a leading role in developing and promoting the industry. He has served on the CSA advisory committee for CSA Z-185 and Z-256, on the TSSA Technical Advisory Committee involved in the TSSA Act and Ontario regulations, and on a CECA subcommittee on construction hoists. He holds an EDM-B licence in Ontario and a C-class licence in New Brunswick.

William (Bill) D. Major, B.A., EDM-A

Elevating Devices Mechanic, Class A and elevator company president

William (Bill) Major is a Class A Elevating Devices Mechanic with more than three decades of experience in the elevator trade across a variety of roles. He has worked in installation, repair, maintenance and adjustment of many different types of elevating devices.

Bill holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Economics from Trent University. Throughout his career he has mentored many new helpers and mechanics with a focus on safety, electrical theory, electronics, elevator performance and Technical Standards and Safety Authority requirements.

He is currently president of an independently owned elevator company serving multiple locations in Ontario and also teaches as an instructor with the Norm Benn Training Centre.

Adam Smith

Elevator mechanic, A certificate

Adam Smith is an Elevator Mechanic with an A certificate. Before entering the elevator industry he served for twelve years in the Royal Navy, where he worked as a Petty Officer Marine Engineering Mechanic with experience in steam and diesel engines.

After moving to Canada in the early 1970s he worked in the elevator industry until his retirement in 2010, holding positions as mechanic, adjuster, supervisor and owner of his own elevator company. Adam has also contributed to the industry through service on the Elevator Advisory Committee, CECA and NEEA, and has deep knowledge of elevating devices from relay logic systems to modern microprocessor-based controls.

Joseph Savatti

EDM-A mechanic and escalator specialist

Joseph (Joe) Savatti is an Elevating Devices Mechanic with an EDM-A certificate and nearly three decades of experience as an escalator mechanic with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). He is known for his strong communication and organizational skills and high level of motivation.

Joe is a graduate of George Brown College with a diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technician – Tool and Die Maker, and has completed additional courses in mathematics, calculus, drafting and computer-aided design at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson).

His work has included maintaining, repairing, inspecting, cleaning and modifying escalators and moving walkways in line with Technical Standards and Safety Authority requirements and CSA B44. Joe has also served as Trainer and Method Writer for the Elevating Devices Section at the TTC and as an instructor with the Norm Benn Training Centre.
